While I was in the emergency department for complications and concerns during a miscarriage, Hannah James, RN, provided kind and compassionate care. Despite being very busy with a high volume of patients, she checked on me frequently, went out of her way to make sure I had everything I needed to be as comfortable as possible, spoke highly of our other care team members, and consistently spoke to my husband and me kindly and in a way that eased our minds and helped distract us from the heartbreak we were feeling. Her kindness and comforting demeanor extended to helping me into the car so I could return home. When you are in an emergency or heartbreaking medical situation, the care team you are placed with really makes all the difference in how you feel in your heart and mind when you walk away. The devastating experience of losing my pregnancy was made considerably easier to bear due to Hannah James’s kindness, compassion, attentive care, and comforting bedside manner. I believe Hannah James meets the criteria and deserves the DAISY Award because I know she played a massive role in lifting my spirits and making my husband and me feel genuinely cared for in the middle of our darkest day. In the future, when I think of my loss, I’m sure there will always be sadness and pain, but there will also be the memory of Hannah James, RN, and the lengths she went to make sure there was comfort and compassion as well. And that is truly a gift and something I will always be grateful for.
