As I sat there crying, he made sure I knew that yes, I was there for my mom, but he was there for both of us.
My 70-year-old mother was transported to St. David's Medical Center early this morning, around 4 a.m., when there were concerns about the circulation to one of her feet, her heart, and her breathing. I followed the ambulance for the 2-hour drive to Austin. I was stressed, incredibly worried, tired, and hungry. When Sean came in to give me an update on my mom, he immediately recognized that I was tired and so very worried. He took the time to sit with me while my mom was away getting a CT Scan to see what I needed. He asked if there was anything he could do for me, then he asked me if I had eaten. I told him that I had not eaten since around 5 pm the day before. He asked me if I would like some coffee and some breakfast. Then he asked if I had any dietary restrictions. I let him know that I cannot drink coffee, but if there was any tea, I would appreciate it. Sean left and came back with a breakfast tray and teabags with hot water. Then he asked if I would like a special St. Patrick's Pistachio muffin if I had no nut allergies. He then brought one to me. As I sat there crying, he made sure I knew that yes, I was there for my mom, but he was there for both of us. His compassion and empathy meant the world to me. To him, it was such a small thing and was not a big deal, but it truly was huge. I'm sitting here beside my mom, who may not make it, and to have someone care enough to check on me to make sure I was ok means more than words will ever be able to express.
