She encourages us to cross-train on our different procedures and would never stifle someone's desire to learn.
I could speak for an eternity about why Nicole deserves the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. She started on our unit as a staff nurse from the American Red Cross, and before the end of her three-month orientation, it was obvious she was meant to be a leader. The opportunity for her to assume that role came shortly after, and she has embraced it effortlessly.
Nicole shows up for her staff every single day in all of the ways that matter. She consistently creates an environment of trust and mutual respect in her staff. She always includes her staff in decisions that require input, such as scheduling conflicts, unit-based projects, and collaborations with other departments that affect our workflow. She recognizes that the outcomes of these decisions affect us directly, and by giving us the opportunity to make those decisions with her, she trusts our judgment and our ability to be an autonomous work group.
She is everyone's biggest cheerleader when we want to pursue professional development. She encourages us to cross-train on our different procedures and would never stifle someone's desire to learn. She has been extremely supportive of all our staff who have worked towards advancing the framework.
Nicole is in a difficult position with her workflow. We are primarily a nursing unit, but our specific department works closely with pathology and bone marrow transplant. There are a number of regulatory conditions that she needs to manage for pathology/BMT that get integrated into our nursing workflow. Needless to say, it is an enormous responsibility for one person to do. Given the sensitivity and importance of all this, she works tirelessly to make it easier for her staff. She will turn 100 pages of pharmaceutical manufacturer guidelines for CAR-T into a single-page SOP for us to refer to. She will provide all the resources we need to succeed. Nicole focuses her job on making our jobs easier.
In addition to everything she does for her staff, Nicole prioritizes our patients. Every decision and every change in our unit is made with our patients' safety and well-being in mind. She is always working to improve patient outcomes and the patient experience in our unit. Our maintenance patients have built a rapport with her and enjoy seeing/interacting with her around our unit.
My favorite thing about Nicole is her attitude. She walks into the unit every single day with a wide smile to greet us. She exudes positivity, and it is so refreshing. We are so lucky to work with such an influential, caring leader!
