During a recent ER encounter, a Spanish-speaking patient struggled to understand the severity of his diagnosis—Type A dissection with a ruptured thoracic aneurysm. Despite the surgeon’s efforts to explain the situation using the language line, the patient did not fully grasp that his condition was fatal without immediate surgery.

Recognizing the critical communication gap, Jannin stepped in and spoke directly with the patient in Spanish. Her face-to-face conversation, combined with genuine empathy, allowed her to clearly convey the seriousness of his condition and the urgency of proceeding to the operating room.
