Not one dressing was removed without care, and even though it was not her fault, she apologized frequently while scrubbing each burned site.
I am nominating Celia Tisnado for the DAISY Award for the incredible care my brother received during his aftercare in the Burn Unit. Dealing with a burn injury is one of the most painful and frightening experiences a person can go through, but Celia was a beacon of calm. She didn't just treat his wounds; she treated him like a human being. She took the time to explain every procedure, managed his pain with incredible sensitivity, and always made sure he felt safe and heard. Her presence alone changed the atmosphere of the room from stress to healing. My brother Malcolm and I are so grateful for the light she brought into a very dark time in his life.

My brother’s recovery in the Burn Unit Clinic required very difficult and painful dressing changes and procedures. Celia demonstrated extraordinary technical skills, but what stood out most was her extreme patience. She never rushed him, always encouraged him, and performed her duties with a gentle touch that made a world of difference. She treated my brother with dignity, which gave him the strength to keep coming. Celia represents the very best of what nursing should be—highly skilled, yet deeply empathetic.

Not only did she provide my brother with top-tier clinical care, but she also became a vital support system for our entire family. She recognized our fear and confusion and took extra minutes from her busy shift to answer our questions and offer encouragement. She even recontacted the physician after he left because we had another question that was beyond her scope of practice. In an environment as intense as the Burn Unit, Celia managed to bring a sense of peace and hope. Knowing my brother’s clinical care was under her watch allowed me to breathe a little easier. She is an asset to this hospital and a true blessing to her patients.

The care we received at the Burn Unit Clinic was incredible and most appreciated. On the first clinic appointment, we did not know what to expect, but Celia came into the room and immediately assessed his pain. She then asked how Malcolm was doing and explained the purpose of the visit and process. Not one dressing was removed without care, and even though it was not her fault, she apologized frequently while scrubbing each burned site. She also educated us about the wounds by showing us the different color changes, informing us that bleeding is good, and explaining the reason his finger pads were so sensitive. She also ensured we had enough dressings at home for Malcolm.

By far, if anyone deserves the DAISY Award, it is Mrs. Celia. She earned it. Her bedside manners are not something you can teach; she was born with these skills.
