Nicole takes a personal and genuine interest in how I am doing outside of treatment.
No one wants to hear that they have cancer or need chemo. The tests, numbers, stages, and other technical explanations do little to ease a person's mind. Peace of mind is mostly provided by a caring, optimistic, and invested team. Let me introduce you to the extraordinary nurse who walked with me through most of my chemo journey.
For my first day of chemotherapy, Nicole walked us back to the Cancer Treatment Center. The center is a nice, calming place, but what makes it exceptional are the nurses. Their teamwork in the treatment room is marvelous.
My first few days are a bit blurry, but Nicole walked me through what to expect during my first treatment, reasons to call, what was expected, and what was not.
I didn't make it easy during those first few treatments. I had a major reaction to one chemotherapy drug at least three times. Nicole was there for every one of them. She began sitting by my side during treatment so she could be there immediately if I reacted again. She communicated wonderfully with both my husband and me, making sure we understood our options for the remainder of each treatment session.
There was seldom a time when she did not have an answer to our questions. If she was ever unsure, she was quick to confirm the information and return with an answer.
Eventually, everything got sorted out, and I could rock chemo like a champ.
Nicole greeted every new family member I brought with a warm smile and genuine kindness. She always seemed happy to spend a few extra minutes discussing book recommendations or looking at pictures of quilts with them.
Nicole takes a personal and genuine interest in how I am doing outside of treatment. She keeps up casual conversations that help make chemotherapy more bearable. She always has a bit of advice when I need it, whether I'm coming in for fluids or we're talking about our sons, who both have constant nosebleeds.
She regularly checks to make sure I am comfortable, ensuring the lights are positioned exactly how I like them. She is always ready to ask, "Anything else I can get you, my dear?"
Nicole's obvious passion for and expertise in her profession, paired with her caring demeanor and warm charisma, are the reasons I believe she is truly deserving of th DAISY Award.
