I would like to nominate my coworker, Alexis Chappell, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional clinical judgment, patient advocacy, and quick thinking that truly saved a patient’s life. While caring for her patient, Alexis noticed that the patient’s NG tube was drawing back pink fluid and that the patient was beginning to look unwell and feel sick. Trusting her assessment and instincts, she immediately recognized that something was not right.
Without hesitation, she notified the medical team and advocated for further evaluation by requesting a KUB. The imaging revealed that the NG tube had been mistakenly placed in the patient’s lung, creating a potentially life-threatening situation. Because of Alexis’s prompt action and attention to subtle but critical changes, the patient's life was saved.
Alexis’s calm demeanor, strong assessment skills, and dedication to patient safety exemplify the highest standards of nursing practice. She did not ignore warning signs or delay care — she spoke up, took action, and protected her patient. Her vigilance and commitment made a direct impact on this patient’s outcome and reflect the compassion, professionalism, and excellence that the DAISY Award represents.
