Rey truly represents the best of nursing. He is one who elevates the profession through his character, accountability, and his heart.
As a leader, Rey inspires others through his daily actions. He mentors the staff, volunteers for activities on the unit, leads initiatives, and advocates relentlessly for doing the right thing. He does this even when no one is watching because of his integrity. Rey’s internal moral compass is stronger than anything. If he makes a mistake, he owns it immediately.

I have witnessed him treat the other nurses with so much respect, and this includes me. When things happen in the unit, Rey will be the one bringing the ethical standards to light and pulling the policy without being told. His professionalism and consistent pursuit of excellence have earned him the admiration and respect of the entire MICU team. Many staff members openly look up to him as a role model for what it means to be a nurse at Memorial Hermann.

Rey truly represents the best of nursing. He is one who elevates the profession through his character, accountability, and his heart. Rey exemplifies all these qualities and more. His dedication strengthens our team, enhances our culture, and significantly contributes to exceptional patient care.

He completes the night shift schedule with an open mind and flexibility to accommodate the team as best as he can. From volunteering at Light the Night, cooking chili for the chili cookoff, and attending the Medical ICU council monthly to help improve the unit’s workflow and work through barriers, Rey understands that Nursing Excellence starts with each individual nurse feeling valued and appreciated.

One powerful example of how he demonstrates patient-centered care occurred during the hospitalization of a critically ill patient who was newly diagnosed with a life-limiting condition. The patient and family were overwhelmed, frightened, and unsure about the next steps in the plan of care. He took the initiative to bring the entire care team together, including the intensivist, respiratory therapist, and bedside nurse, to ensure the patient and family received clear, consistent information.

He spent time at the bedside explaining what to expect, offering reassurance, and encouraging the family to write down questions. He emphasized that their voice mattered and that they were essential partners in the care plan. During the family meeting, he skillfully translated complex medical information into a dialogue that the family could understand, ensuring they never felt rushed or dismissed. He maintained the patient’s dignity by asking for permission before discussing sensitive topics and frequently checking that both the patient and family understood and were comfortable.

When emotions rose, he remained present and listened intently, validating feelings and advocating for the patient’s wishes. After the meeting, he collaborated with the team to adjust the care plan based on the patient's goals and the family’s concerns. He updated the bedside nurse, leadership, reinforced patient education, and continued checking in with the family throughout the shift.

The family later shared that he was “the first person who made sure we understood” and that his compassion and clarity helped them gain confidence in making decisions.

One of the most meaningful examples of his commitment to treating everyone with dignity and embracing all beliefs, experiences, and points of view can be seen in the everyday culture he fosters within the MICU, a unit rich with diversity, languages, cultures, and backgrounds. He has a natural ability to make every team member feel valued, seen, and respected, and he models this behavior consistently in both quiet moments and high-stress situations.

A recent example occurred during a busy shift when several team members were observing different cultural and religious practices, including varied meal timings, languages, and communication preferences. He recognized the importance of ensuring the entire team feels supported, not just clinically but as whole individuals. Without making it a formal directive, he adjusted assignments to honor those needs, checked in personally with staff to make sure they felt comfortable stepping aside when needed, helped plan potlucks, and encouraged the rest of the team to support each other as a unified group.

His actions sent a clear message: our differences make us stronger, and every person deserves space for their identity. He also demonstrates respect through the way he ensures that every voice, regardless of tenure, background, or role, always has a place in decision-making.
