I would like to nominate Nurse Kathleen Stafford for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary  compassion and kindness she showed to a 15-year-old patient undergoing knee  surgery. This was his first surgery, and he was understandably anxious and  nervous. From the very beginning, she treated him not just as a patient but as a scared teenager who needed reassurance and understanding.  She took the time to sit with him, explain everything in a way he could understand,  and answer every question patiently. She spoke calmly and confidently, helping  ease his fears without dismissing them. Her gentle approach, warm smile, and  genuine empathy made such a difference in a moment that felt overwhelming. 

What stood out most was how she connected with him on a personal level. She  talked with him about his interests and helped distract him when his anxiety started  to build. She made him feel safe, heard, and cared for. As a parent, watching  someone care for your child with that level of compassion is something you never  forget.  Because of her, what could have been a traumatic experience became one filled  with reassurance and trust. She exemplifies what nursing is truly about — clinical  excellence combined with heartfelt compassion. She made a lasting impact on both  the patient and our family, and she is more than deserving of this recognition.
