Our family nominates Olivia because she went above and beyond in her care of our son, P, while he was inpatient for 175 days last year for his AML treatment. There are so many deserving nurses on the Peds floor, but Olivia stands out for us because she made P feel like a friend rather than “just a patient” during his long stay. No teenager wants to spend a year in the hospital, and Olivia tried her hardest to make her shifts fun when she worked. Although our teenager was stubborn, she never let that interfere with the care that was needed. She became like family to all of us, just like the whole team did, but she made us really feel like she cared in so many ways. She would come sit with us when we needed someone to listen. Even at the beginning, she helped us plan P’s “hair cutting party” to make it fun, because she knew that losing his hair was his biggest fear. There were so many situations, but as a mom and nurse myself, all this really stuck out to me personally.
