Rod not only cared for her medical needs but also nurtured her emotional well-being with genuine compassion and presence.

Rod cared for my wife following her surgery, and from the very beginning it was clear that he is an extraordinary nurse and an even more extraordinary human being. He took the time to truly connect with her—carefully explaining what he was doing, what to expect, and where she was in her recovery—always in a calm, reassuring way that immediately put her at ease.

What truly set Rod apart were the thoughtful, compassionate touches that went far beyond routine nursing care. He sang and played the guitar for her, creating moments of comfort and joy during a vulnerable time, and even brought her a small gift—an unexpected gesture that meant more than words can express. He noticed her discomfort and proactively used heating pads to ease her back pain. He thoughtfully set up a small hanging trash bag within reach, so she wouldn’t have to strain or move unnecessarily—such a simple act, yet incredibly meaningful.

Every action Rod took reflected genuine empathy, attentiveness, and a deep respect for his patient’s dignity and comfort. His bedside manner is unmatched; he made my wife feel seen, heard, and truly cared for, not just as a patient, but as a person.

Rod embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. His compassion, kindness, and dedication transformed our experience during a difficult moment, and we will never forget the impact he had on our family. He is, without question, the most compassionate nurse we have ever encountered, and he deserves every accolade and recognition that can be bestowed upon him.

After bravely battling cancer, my mother, underwent a mastectomy and understandably felt fearful about what might come next, especially given her high risk for infection. During this incredibly vulnerable time, we were fortunate to have a nurse named Rod, whose compassion, patience, and humanity made all the difference in her recovery experience.

Rod was consistently gentle and reassuring with my mother, taking the time to communicate with her in Spanish whenever possible. Although English is his first language, he made every effort to bridge the language barrier so she could feel understood and supported. My mother had many questions and anxieties, and Rod never rushed to her. Instead, he answered each concern with kindness, clarity, and respect, helping her feel safe and informed every step of the way.

After spending the night in recovery, Rod continued to go above and beyond in ways we will never forget. He took time out of his busy shift to play his guitar and sing with my mother—bringing light, joy, and comfort at a moment when she didn’t even realize how much she needed it. That simple yet profound act lifted her spirits and reminded her that healing involves both the body and the soul.

Because of Rod’s extraordinary care, my mother now feels confident and empowered about what lies ahead in her journey. He not only cared for her medical needs but also nurtured her emotional well-being with genuine compassion and presence. Rod truly embodies the heart of nursing and everything the DAISY Award represents. Our family will always be grateful for the comfort, dignity, and hope he gave my mother during such a critical moment in her life.
