Misty demonstrates that ambulatory nursing is longitudinal, relational, and transformative.
As the Valve Clinic Coordinator for a high-acuity structural heart program in Southwest Louisiana, Misty Theriot provides comprehensive outpatient evaluation, pre-procedure optimization, patient education, and longitudinal follow-up for individuals undergoing advanced valve interventions. She exemplifies exceptional ambulatory nursing through coordinated care, community commitment, and systems-level leadership. In the ambulatory setting, patients with advanced valvular heart disease rely on structured evaluation, procedural preparation, and close follow-up to recover safely. Misty approaches this responsibility with the understanding that clinical success is inseparable from social stability. She has integrated assessment of social drivers of health into routine clinic workflow, ensuring that barriers such as housing instability, food insecurity, and financial hardship are identified and addressed early in the care continuum.
Following Hurricane Laura, which devastated Southwest Louisiana, an elderly patient who had undergone a structural heart procedure just one week prior was unable to evacuate. As the primary caregiver for his wife, who was receiving hospice care, leaving their home was not an option. Without reliable power and limited access to food, he faced recovery in conditions that placed both his health and his wife's safety at risk. When Misty learned of his situation, she acted immediately. She coordinated delivery of a generator to restore essential power, arranged food services, and ensured regular check-ins to monitor their safety. Her actions ensured that a medically fragile, one-week post-procedure patient could recover safely while continuing to care for his terminally ill spouse. In a time of widespread devastation, she remained steadfastly focused on the well-being of her patient and his family. This dedication is consistent across her practice.
More recently, a commercial truck driver recovering from valve intervention was unable to return to work due to federal regulations, placing him at risk for housing instability. Misty mobilized community organizations, partnered with hospital foundation leadership, secured temporary financial assistance, and ensured transportation support for follow-up visits. Her proactive intervention prevented housing displacement and allowed the patient to focus on healing.
Misty also leads continuous quality improvement initiatives within the structural heart program to optimize care across the continuum and standardize coordination processes. In addition to integrating structured social drivers screening, she has established actionable pathways tailored to individual patient needs, including forming local dental and community provider partnerships and collaborating with the hospital foundation and national organizations to secure essential resources. She has contributed to regional and national forums focused on advancing cardiovascular care.
Even as she participates in national initiatives, her dedication remains firmly rooted in Southwest Louisiana, where she takes great pride in serving her community with integrity and compassion. Much of this work occurs quietly and without expectation of recognition, yet its impact on patient safety, stability, and dignity is profound. Misty demonstrates that ambulatory nursing is longitudinal, relational, and transformative. Through crisis response, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustained quality improvement, she elevates standards of care while never losing sight of the individuals and families at the center of her work.
