What resonated most with the patient was that Mitch personally came to check on her during her stay. His presence reinforced that leadership remains connected and involved with the bedside.

Mitch consistently creates an environment where trust, compassion, mutual respect, professional growth, and ethical practice are not only encouraged, but truly lived within our unit. When you walk the halls of the unit, the cohesiveness and resiliency of the team is palpable. His leadership has shaped a culture that is widely regarded by staff and colleagues alike, as one of the strongest and most supportive in the hospital.

Mitch consistently uses UCHealth’s ‘Just Culture’ algorithm to foster trust through transparent communication and approachable leadership. He explains decisions clearly, listens without judgment, and ensures that every team member feels safe speaking up. This psychological safety has directly contributed to our unit’s status as a high retention team, where team members choose to stay because they feel valued, understood, and supported.

Compassion is at the heart of Mitch’s leadership. He consistently checks in on staff well being, supports the team through emotionally challenging patient situations, and models empathy in every interaction. His steady presence reinforces that caring for his team members is essential to caring for patients.

Mutual respect is a defining feature of our unit’s culture. Mitch treats every voice regardless of role or experience with equal importance. When mistakes occur, he encourages learning rather than blame, creating an environment where curiosity thrives and growth feels safe. When successes happen, he celebrates them openly, giving credit where it’s due and reinforcing a shared sense of pride.

Professional development is another area where Mitch’s impact is undeniable. Under his guidance, our unit now has ten Oncology Certified Nurses, and four nurses currently participating in NextGen/UEXCEL. He advocates for education evidenced by his background as the Oncology Clinical Educator prior to stepping into management. Additionally, he advocates for mentorship, and career advancement, removing barriers and encouraging every nurse to realize their potential. Above all, Mitch leads with integrity. His ethical decision-making, fairness, and unwavering advocacy for both patients and staff set the tone for the entire team.

Mitch leads with a shared vision, genuine enthusiasm, and commitment to creating a safe environment for both patients and staff. Like we said, it is common to see him rounding on the unit, jumping in where needed, and implementing additional interventions that support quality and safety initiatives. No job is too little or too big for Mitch, he is always willing to lend a hand. What makes Mitch great is the way he channels positivity into purposeful leadership. He arrives each day with a smile working to lift morale, reduce stress, and help the team feel supported. He understands that when staff feel valued and encouraged, they are better equipped to care for patients. He speaks to this often, too!

Mitch is also a proactive and collaborative problem-solver. He encourages staff ideas during individual check ins, (DBC, Lead PCA check in, charge day, etc.), ensures every voice is heard, helps refine ideas, and actively supports implementation of rollouts. This has resulted in meaningful improvements, such as the development of HAPI and fall education packets, the restructuring of mobility power hour, and optimized timing for PCA vital sign rounds. He promotes healthy, friendly competitions like TACO Less (which we have done twice but consistently reference) to help ensure staff can finish their work and leave on time demonstrating his commitment to both outcomes and well-being.

His leadership extends beyond clinical tasks. Mitch invests in team connection, organizing staff outings and encourages camaraderie that strengthens trust, communication and connection. He organizes activities such as fun mocktail rounding and staff breakfasts to create a space to connect with staff. He advocates for stay-safe huddles, checks in regularly with team members, and always centers his decisions around what will benefit both the patient and the staff experience.

Mitch’s intuitive ability to understand his team, identify what they need, and roll out initiatives thoughtfully is what truly sets him apart. He works really hard for his team to understand the “why” behind decision making. He leads with heart, humility, and genuine dedication. He is so humble, but his hard work is felt! Through his vision, encouragement, and hands-on support, he motivates the team to achieve better outcomes for themselves and the patients they serve every day.

One of the most compelling examples of how Mitch enhances the image of nursing comes from a director rounding on patients at a different UCHealth facility. The patient shared how struck she was by the consistency, knowledge, and attentiveness of every staff member involved in her care on the Medical Oncology Unit at UCH. She specifically noted how well the team communicated and adhered to isolation precautions, stating that her experience on our unit was “vastly different” from other hospitalizations. In her words, the difference came down to the culture of excellence that exists on this unit, one that Mitch has intentionally cultivated.

Her experience reflected more than a single positive interaction; it highlighted how Mitch’s leadership elevates the standard of nursing practice across the entire team. She described how mobility was consistently prioritized, with staff ensuring she was up and walking multiple times a day. This demonstrated the team’s commitment to evidence-based practices and shows how the expectations that Mitch sets translate directly into patient care. The coordination and reliability among staff made her feel confident that every nurse and team member was aligned in delivering thoughtful, high-quality care.

What resonated most with the patient was that Mitch personally came to check on her during her stay. His presence reinforced that leadership remains connected and involved with the bedside. His willingness to be visible and involved demonstrates to both patients and staff that nursing leadership is grounded in compassion, accountability, and a deep commitment to patient care.

Through leadership moments like this, Mitch promotes and enhances the image of nursing within the organization, the community, and the profession. Within the organization, his visible presence and engagement reinforces that he is not only an operational leader but also a champion of quality, culture, and patient-centered care. He ensures patients and families see the best of what nursing can be. Experiences like this patient’s extended beyond our hospital walls, shaping how they perceived nursing leadership and the professionalism of nursing staff. Mitch also remains actively engaged in advancing the profession through his membership in the Oncology Nursing Society, where he attends monthly meetings to stay connected to oncology nursing practices and professional development. By cultivating a culture of clinical excellence, teamwork, and compassion, Mitch elevates the reputation of nursing leadership and demonstrates the meaningful impact that transformational nurse leadership has on both patient care and team culture.

Mitchell (“Mitch”) Rossi embodies transformational nurse leadership at UCHealth. He strives to foster a unit culture centered on learning, healing, connection, and excellence. He does this by ensuring our team members feel comfortable asking questions, have the resources to perform high quality care and can connect with one another and our patients. Mitch consistently prioritizes patient-centered care while ensuring staff well-being is never compromised. He remains flexible and responsive to team needs while maintaining safe staffing and high-quality patient care.

Mitch models UCHealth’s values in his commitment to quality and safety which is evidenced by a notable reduction in HAPIs through hands on involvement, interdisciplinary collaboration, staff coaching, and improved education and mobility initiatives. He leads by example; rounding frequently, reinforcing clinical priorities, and stepping into direct patient care whenever needed. He is often seen running to bed alarms, placing roll belts on patients, turning patients, and any other cares that need completed. Mitch leads with integrity, communicates transparently, addresses challenges directly, and models consistent, evidence based decision making. His steadiness and accessibility have built strong trust within the team. He inspires excellence through both accountability and encouragement, guided by his core belief: “I will never ask my team to do something I wouldn’t do myself.” This approach creates unity, respect, and a culture where people want to work.
