We had a patient on our unit who was low-income and didn’t have much. The outfits that the patient brought for the newborn baby were covered with stains and hair. While the patient was here, she was always asking for extra food because she stated she was so hungry. Chelsea left work and picked up groceries. She brought clothes for the patient’s other two children and clothes for the baby.

The patient stated that she needed to leave so she could get home to her significant other and her other two kids. The patient arrived at the hospital by ambulance and didn’t have transportation home. We had tried calling taxi services, and no one was available. Chelsea stated that she would take the patient home, all the way to Providence. Per our director’s approval and with a police escort, she safely took the patient home.

Chelsea’s act of kindness towards this patient put a smile on her face, and she was very thankful and appreciative. We need more nurses like Chelsea who will not only care for the patient but also care for the patient’s family as well. This was a Christmas miracle for this family.
