I have had the privilege of working beside Hana Kismetovic in two emergencies in the past month, and I am profoundly impressed by her professionalism, dedication, and embodiment of the VA's I CARE values:

Integrity: In the first instance, we were called to assist with a code blue on the 1st floor of our building. Hana immediately took charge, reflecting her integrity and strong sense of responsibility. As we ran down the hall with the crash cart, she was already delegating responsibilities, ensuring that every team member knew their role. Her ability to lead with clear and decisive action demonstrated her unwavering integrity in crisis situations.

Commitment: Hana's commitment to her team and the Veterans was evident as we prepared for the code blue. In the elevator, she made sure we were gloved, had the O2 tank ready with the cannula, and had the Zoll powered and ready to go. Her thorough preparation and swift actions ensured we were ready to provide the best possible care to the Veteran, showing her deep commitment to her role and the well-being of the Veterans.

Advocacy: The most recent event where Hana truly stood out to me was when we had two Veterans stuck in the elevator in Building 111. Hana immediately gathered her team, delegated tasks, and worked to open the elevator doors. When one Veteran, who suffers from PTSD and claustrophobia, began to panic, Hana advocated for him by talking to him for almost an hour. She reassured him and led him through breathing exercises to reduce his anxiety. Hana's advocacy was critical in calming the Veteran and providing the support he desperately needed.

Respect: Hana's respect for the Veterans was clear when she promised the panicking Veteran that she would not leave his side, and she kept that promise. Her actions showed deep respect for his needs and fears, and her commitment to staying with him provided immense comfort. Later in the day, Hana continued to check on him, and even promised to ride the elevator with him when he was ready, showing respectful and genuine care for his well-being.

Excellence: Hana's overall conduct in both emergency situations exemplified excellence. She maintained total control, prepared her team effectively, and managed the fast-paced incidents with unparalleled skill. Her dedication to providing excellent care not only saved a life but also demonstrated her superior nursing capabilities. Hana's actions portray a nurse who is not only proficient but also excels in every aspect of her duties.

I am proud to work alongside Hana Kisemtovic, and I believe these instances clearly illustrated how she incorporates the VA's I CARE values into her care for our Veterans. Her integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence in nursing are commendable and truly deserving of the DAISY Award.
