There are moments in nursing when the extraordinary heart of a leader reveals itself- not through grand gestures, but through quiet, unwavering presence in the most devastating circumstances.

In one of the most difficult situations our team has ever faced, Kim stood as a pillar of compassion, strength, and guidance. What she did for one of our coworkers, whose husband was suddenly admitted in critical condition, was nothing short of remarkable.

From the very beginning, Kim ensured that every detail-clinical, emotional, and logistical-was handled with the tenderness and urgency the situation deserved. She immediately arranged for the patient to be placed in a private, quiet room, away from the natural curiosity and concern of passing coworkers. She protected our coworker and her family with dignity and discretion, allowing them space to process the unimaginable without interruptions or questions.

In those first moments, when fear and heartbreak collided, Kim created an environment where love, family, and presence could take priority.

Recognizing the complexity of the patient’s condition, Kim arranged for a second team of physicians to be involved-anticipating needs before they arose, ensuring that no delay or gap in care would occur. Her foresight gave the family reassurance that everything possible was being done.

The following day, Kim coordinated an extraordinary level of support by assigning two nurses to care for this patient, not only for his physical needs, which were extensive and life-sustaining, but also for the emotional needs of the wife, daughters, and relatives gathered at the bedside.

I was one of those nurses. I can say with absolute honesty that I could not have made it through that shift without the second nurse by my side. One of us was continuously managing multiple drips, machines, and interventions to keep the patient alive. The other provided constant emotional support to the family, listening, comforting, and simply being present in their pain.

Kim ensured we had what we needed before we knew we needed it. She checked on us, checked on the family, and carried the invisible burdens that come with leading during tragedy. She honored the humanity of everyone involved.

Despite every effort, the patient passed away later that day. It was heartbreaking. But the grace within the room; the gratitude expressed by the family for how their loved one was cared for...was profound.

They repeatedly told us how thankful they were that we cared for both their father/husband and for them. Our coworker, despite her own grief, expressed overwhelming appreciation for how protected, supported, and uplifted she felt.

This experience could have broken us. Instead, because of Kim’s leadership, compassion, and unwavering presence, it became a moment where nursing was shown in its purest form: love, humanity, integrity, and courage.

Kim embodied everything the DAISY Award represents. She cared for a patient and family facing the unthinkable. She cared for a coworker whose heart was shattering. And she cared for her nursing team, ensuring we had the strength to provide the level of care she knew this family deserved.

For her extraordinary compassion, foresight, leadership, and humanity, I wholeheartedly believe Kim deserves this DAISY Award.
