From the very beginning, Jenifer Rogers was a light during one of the darkest moments of our lives.
Our son was admitted to the PICU after being diagnosed with a pineal brain tumor. What followed were eight incredibly difficult days for our family. During that time, he endured MRI’s, CT scans, a brain biopsy, a catheter, a PICC line, and countless needle pokes. It was a frightening and overwhelming experience for all of us, especially a child.
From the very beginning, Jenifer Rogers was a light during one of the darkest moments of our lives. She was the nurse who was our first nurse when we first arrived, and we were fortunate enough to have her again a couple more times during our stay. From the moment we met her, she treated our son with such compassion, patience, and kindness.
Jenifer made sure he was always as comfortable as possible and did everything she could to brighten his day. She even ordered him strawberry milkshakes to help make sure he was getting nutrients when eating was difficult. Small gestures like that meant so much to us and helped make a hard experience feel a little more normal for him.
She also found creative ways to make things less scary for him. Instead of transporting him in a wheelchair, she would take him on walks around the unit in a wagon, so it felt fun instead of medical. She even took him to the toy closet so he could pick out something special. These moments gave him something to look forward to and helped him feel like a kid during a very difficult time.
But what meant even more to us as parents was the way she cared for our entire family. She took the time to sit my husband and me down and carefully explain our son's disorder. She came prepared with printed papers, diagrams she drew herself, and information she had researched so we could truly understand what was happening. She patiently walked us through everything, answering our questions and easing our fears during an incredibly overwhelming time.
She also had an incredible way with our son. During every scary moment, she talked him through what was happening so he could feel safe and understood. Her calm presence and reassuring voice made procedures that could have been terrifying feel manageable for him.
One moment that meant the world to us was when Jenifer came in on her day off just to spend time with him. She played games with him and built Legos simply to make him smile. That kind of compassion and dedication goes far beyond what anyone could expect from a nurse. She would also pop in just to say hello, even when she was not assigned as his nurse, making sure she saw him and checked on him whenever she could.
By the end of our stay, Jenifer didn’t feel like just a nurse caring for our child; she felt like family. She brought comfort, knowledge, strength, and kindness when we needed it the most.
When our family looks back on one of the hardest moments of our lives, we will also remember the kindness, warmth, and compassion that Jenifer Rodgers showed our son every single day. She didn’t just care for our son medically; she cared for his heart and spirit as well. Because of her, he felt safe, and we felt hope.
Jenifer Rogers truly represents the very best of what nursing is meant to be, and our family will never forget the extraordinary care she gave our son.
Thank you, Jenifer, from the bottom of our hearts. You are an amazing nurse, and one we will remember forever.
