The tireless efforts, clinical expertise, and genuine human connection demonstrated by these nurses have left an indelible mark on our family.
Please accept this heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care my son received from the Neonatal ICU nurses at SIUH. As a Senior Director in the Emergency Department and a long-standing member of the Northwell Health family, my connection to this organization runs deep, but the true depth of our clinical and compassionate care was never more evident than during his 71-day journey in your NICU.

My son's journey began unexpectedly. After a planned C-section, he was diagnosed with Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn (TTN) and transferred to the NICU. What we initially anticipated would be a brief stay soon unfolded into a profound challenge when, on day six, he was diagnosed with moderate to large Atrial and Ventricular Septal Defects (ASD and VSD), requiring open-heart surgery in the future. This devastating news was met with an immediate embrace of support from my SIUH colleagues, particularly the NICU team.

For the next 70-plus days, the SIUH NICU became my son's home and his nurses, his steadfast caregivers and advocates. Beyond the complex medical management coordinated by our outstanding neonatology and cardiology teams, it was the unwavering presence and profound compassion of the NICU nurses that provided a constant source of comfort, education, and hope. They seamlessly integrated into our family, nurturing him with tender care, meticulously monitoring his progress, and advocating for his every need.

My son truly became "one of their own" and "the big boy" on the unit. Despite his cardiac condition making feeding a significant challenge, these nurses patiently worked to establish his feeding tolerance, skillfully managed his NGT feeds, and taught us essential care techniques, empowering us to be confident caregivers at home. When a gastrostomy tube became the safest pathway home, the NICU nurses provided invaluable guidance and emotional support, preparing us for the next phase of his care and celebrating with us when he was successfully discharged home for Christmas.

We want to extend our profound gratitude to the many individuals who became an integral part of my son's journey, especially his dedicated NICU RNs: Judy, Jessica, Jen, Jill, Lora, Lisa, Myrna, Cheryl, Alina, Cathy, Rihanna, Diana, Juliette, and countless others. Each day, they brought not only their exceptional clinical expertise but also their boundless empathy, anticipating our questions, offering words of encouragement, and ensuring his comfort and well-being were always paramount. Their hands-on care, vigilant observation, and compassionate communication truly exemplified patient-centered nursing.

We also acknowledge the critical contributions of the entire multidisciplinary team, including the Neonatology Team, Pediatric Cardiology, the NPs, PAs, Residents, Respiratory Therapists, Speech Pathology, and/or Nursing Leadership, and the seamless collaboration with Cohen Children's Medical Center.

The tireless efforts, clinical expertise, and genuine human connection demonstrated by these nurses have left an indelible mark on our family. Even as we celebrate my son being home, we understand his journey continues. The sustained commitment and continuous check-ins from the NICU team provide the much-needed support as we navigate the long road ahead, a testament to their holistic and patient-centered approach that extends far beyond the hospital stay.

This experience has only deepened my pride in being a part of Northwell Health. The safety, well-being, and compassionate care of our patients are indeed at the forefront of what we do, and my son's care is a profound testament to that commitment. There are truly not enough words to express our gratitude for the exceptional care, compassion, and collaborative spirit that saw him through these challenging first months.
