Sometimes you wonder if there’s anything Birgit doesn’t know. You can always count on her.
Birgit has been an indispensable part of our palliative care unit for many years and has helped build and shape it from the very beginning through her nursing care. She is one of those people who don’t just do their job—they live it with dedication, compassion, and exceptional professional expertise.
Her extensive knowledge and many years of experience make her a cornerstone of our team. What sets Birgit apart, however, is her ability to consistently put herself aside without reservation while delivering the highest quality of care every day with impressive consistency.
For years, she has given not just 100%, but what feels like 120%—for her patients, for their families, and also for us on the team. Especially in palliative care, where empathy, dignity, and humanity take center stage, she embodies all of these qualities in a special way.
I, too, had the opportunity to experience Birgit firsthand during my placement on our ward as part of my nursing training as a trainee. Even back then, I noticed the calmness, professionalism, and warmth with which she works. She takes her time, listens, often recognizes the needs of even the trainees before they’re expressed, and always acts in the best interests of the patients.
At the same time, she is a reliable point of contact for colleagues and willingly shares her knowledge. Sometimes you wonder if there’s anything Birgit doesn’t know. You can always count on her.
Birgit never seeks the spotlight and always puts herself last. That’s precisely why I think it’s all the more important to give her the recognition she more than deserves!! The DAISY Award would be a wonderful way to highlight and honor her extraordinary work.
To me, Birgit is not only an outstanding nurse but also a great role model. In addition to her work at the patient’s bedside, Birgit also takes on responsibilities beyond her immediate duties by co-teaching pain management in the oncology specialty training program. In doing so, she passes on her valuable knowledge and has a lasting impact on the quality of care beyond our ward.
It’s nearly impossible to limit myself to just one specific situation in which Birgit has made a positive impact. For me personally, Birgit has had an enormous influence: back when I was a trainee and today as a colleague.
Through her, I’ve learned what it truly means to work in nursing: not just to perform tasks, but to support people. She has shaped me professionally, but above all, as a person. I can say with complete conviction that I have become the nurse I am today in part because of her.
