I felt understood. I felt supported. I felt safe.
From the moment I arrived at the hospital, everything moved so quickly. I was already in active labor and fully dilated at 10 cm. I was in intense pain, and it felt overwhelming.

As a woman of color, I carried an added layer of concern. I am aware of the statistics surrounding maternal health and how often pain is dismissed or not taken seriously. That fear was quietly in the back of my mind as I came in.

But the team of nurses who surrounded me that night went above and beyond, and Nurse Ashley in particular completely stood out.

She was incredibly gentle. She held my hands through contractions and spoke to me in such a reassuring tone. At one point, I completely forgot what to do. The pain felt all-consuming, and I froze.

Nurse Ashley leaned in, looked at me, and calmly reminded me to breathe and push as hard as I could. She did not just tell me what to do. She modeled it with me. She breathed with me and mimicked the pushing so I could follow her rhythm. That moment made all the difference. I truly believe her guidance helped me deliver safely.

Throughout the entire process, she never once made me feel like I was too much. My pain was acknowledged. My voice was heard. I apologized several times for screaming and for grabbing onto her garment so tightly during contractions. She smiled and told me that it was exactly what I needed at that moment and that I had nothing to be sorry for. That reassurance meant more than she probably knew.

After delivery, she continued to stand out. She consistently checked in on me and my baby. She explained everything she was doing before I even had to ask. She would tell me what to expect next and make sure I was comfortable. She asked what I needed instead of assuming. She paid attention to the smallest details and anticipated concerns before they became questions. She even made me laugh during such a vulnerable time.

Nurse Ashley and Nurse Kierra worked so beautifully together. Their teamwork was seamless, and it made my husband and my mom feel at ease watching how confidently and compassionately they cared for us. My entire family loved her. She made us feel seen, welcomed, and genuinely cared for, not just like another patient in a room.

When it was time to wheel me to postpartum, we were joking and talking the entire way down the hallway. Even in that transition, she made it feel personal and warm. I never once felt like a nuisance. I felt understood. I felt supported. I felt safe.

Nurse Ashley truly made my labor and delivery experience smooth despite how intense it began. She helped quiet fears I carried as a woman of color walking into childbirth. Her patience, emotional intelligence, clinical skill, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on me and my family. She absolutely went above and beyond, and I will always remember the role she played in bringing my baby into this world.
