I would like to nominate Walter Patterson, RN, of the CVICU at Adventist Rideout Hospital, for the DAISY Award in honor of the extraordinary care he provided to my mother, WS, during her time in the CVICU. From the moment Walter began caring for her, it was clear that he brought far more than clinical skill to his role. He consistently went above and beyond the expectations of a nurse. He cared for my mother with a level of compassion, gentleness, and humanity that brought comfort not only to her, but to our entire family during one of the most heartbreaking chapters of our lives. Walter didn't just perform tasks; he showed up with his heart. He offered reassurance when fear was overwhelming. He brought hope into the room when it felt like all hope had been lost. And in moments when our family was breaking, he didn't stand apart from our grief. He stood with us. He even cried with us. That kind of empathy cannot be taught; it is a rare gift.

My mother faced immense medical challenges, including being intubated twice. The prognosis was grim, and the expectations were low. Yet Walter's presence, encouragement, and unwavering compassion helped keep her spirit alive. He helped give her the strength to push beyond what the doctors believed possible. His care made a meaningful difference in the time we were able to have with her-time we will forever cherish. Walter embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. He is a nurse who heals not only with his hands, but with his humanity. Our family will never forget the kindness, dignity, and hope he brought into my mother's final days. It is with deep gratitude and heartfelt respect that I nominate Walter for this well-deserved recognition.
