Throughout the accelerated BSN program, he has gone above and beyond what is expected of a nursing student. His commitment to patient-centered care, advocacy, and continuous learning sets him apart as someone who truly embodies the values of the nursing profession.

Steven has a natural ability to connect with people. Whether interacting with patients, classmates, or clinical staff, he approaches everyone with kindness, respect, and genuine curiosity about their experiences. He creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable, heard, and valued. This ability to build trust is essential in healthcare, and Steven demonstrates it effortlessly. Patients often feel more at ease in his presence because he takes the time to listen, explain, and ensure they feel included in their care.

During a clinical rotation at Salem Health, Steven demonstrated remarkable compassion and patient advocacy. A patient on the unit was experiencing significant anxiety and repeatedly voiced concerns about their care. Some staff members appeared dismissive of the patient’s fears, which only heightened the patient’s distress. Steven recognized the patient’s emotional needs and responded with patience and empathy. Rather than overlooking the patient’s concerns, he validated their feelings and took the time to listen attentively. His calm and supportive presence helped the patient feel heard and respected during a vulnerable moment. This interaction reflected Steven’s ability to prioritize the emotional and psychological well-being of patients alongside their physical care.

In addition to his compassion, Steven has an incredible drive to grow as a clinician. In a fast-paced accelerated program, he continuously seeks opportunities to expand his knowledge and refine his skills. He has a strong passion for critical care and hopes to pursue a career in the ICU. He actively prepares for this goal by engaging deeply in clinical learning opportunities, asking thoughtful questions, and demonstrating initiative in strengthening his clinical judgment.

Steven also plays an important role in strengthening the sense of community within the nursing program. He is outgoing, approachable, and committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. As the chair of sports within the cohort, he has helped bring students together through activities that foster connection, teamwork, and balance during an intense program. His passion for salsa dancing often brings laughter and joy to classmates and helps create a supportive and welcoming atmosphere.
