Olivia and Sarah demonstrated remarkable attentiveness, critical thinking, and compassion during an incredibly difficult situation.
I would like to recognize Olivia Dierenfeldt and Sarah Kiehl for their exceptional awareness, compassion, and commitment to the well-being of others.
While caring for a young ICU patient who had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, family and friends brought in a volleyball for loved ones to sign with messages of encouragement and support. As Olivia and Sarah looked through the messages, they noticed one note that raised concern. The message suggested that the individual who wrote it may have been experiencing emotional distress and could be in need of immediate support.
Recognizing the potential significance of the message, Olivia and Sarah immediately took action. Rather than dismissing it or assuming someone else would address it, they sought out the appropriate individuals to share their concerns and ensure the situation received the attention it deserved.
When a school representative who was familiar with the patient and his friends arrived, Olivia and Sarah brought the message to their attention. Shortly afterward, they learned that the individual had been identified, was safe, and was receiving the support and assistance she needed.
Olivia and Sarah demonstrated remarkable attentiveness, critical thinking, and compassion during an incredibly difficult situation. Their willingness to trust their instincts, speak up, and advocate for someone they had never even met exemplifies the very best of nursing. Their actions served as a powerful reminder that the impact nurses have often extends far beyond the patients they directly care for.
Through their vigilance, empathy, and commitment to protecting others, Olivia and Sarah embodied the true spirit of the DAISY Award. Their extraordinary actions made a meaningful difference and reflect the profound influence compassionate nurses can have on an entire community.
