Jeannie truly made this family's loss more bearable, and that will be part of my nephew's story for as long as those of us who loved him are alive to remember.
I am a nurse in this hospital who often deals with end-of-life care. I found myself in a different role, as a loved one of a critically ill patient.
My nephew was cared for by Jeannie on the night he died. It was very difficult to be on the other side of the story for me. My nephew was obviously very sick. He was still able to make decisions for himself, and Jeannie very much respected that. When he could no longer make those decisions for himself, Jeannie advocated for him and our family in the best ways possible. She truly listened to what we wanted.
Jeannie, the charge nurse, and I, along with my daughter, who is a SPCT at this hospital, were in the room the majority of the shift. Our hands were on him most of the time. Jeannie worked tirelessly and made us feel like we were all a team. Jeannie was supportive and respectful, even when the events of the night were frustrating, and we knew that despite all efforts, we were nearing the end of life.
Once the decision was made not to continue treatment and to let him die peacefully, Jeannie facilitated his comfort and gave the family time alone with him. Jeannie truly made this family's loss more bearable, and that will be part of my nephew's story for as long as those of us who loved him are alive to remember.
