I would like to recognize Nurse Nixie Cienfuegos for her extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and whole-person care.
When my family and I arrived to visit my 91-year-old grandmother during her recent hospitalization, we were exhausted, overwhelmed, and confused after navigating the transition from the Emergency Department to her inpatient floor. My grandmother herself was understandably disoriented and anxious.
From the moment we entered the room, Nurse Nixie brought a calming, grounding presence that immediately changed the atmosphere—not just clinically, but emotionally. Nurse Nixie spoke to my grandmother with dignity, encouragement, and genuine warmth, telling her she was doing well and expressing pride in her efforts.
When my father explained that we were unclear on the overall timeline and plan of care, Nurse Nixie first asked my grandmother for consent to discuss her care with me—ensuring her autonomy was respected at every step. She never spoke over her or around her. Instead, she made the conversation inclusive, patient-centered, and empowering.
Once permission was given, Nurse Nixie clearly and thoughtfully explained the course of events from admission forward, using language that was simple, defined, and easy to relay to other family members. She outlined what to expect over the day and the following couple of days without creating false expectations, which allowed our family to finally relax. We no longer felt the need to pace the halls waiting for provider rounds or worry about next steps—we felt informed, prepared, and safe.
She also proactively reviewed upcoming appointments and care considerations so we could plan appropriately, particularly around transportation and wound care, helping us feel confident in supporting my grandmother beyond the hospital setting.
What stood out most was the way Nurse Nixie connected with my grandmother as a human being. They shared stories, including my grandmother's memories of working in healthcare decades ago. In those moments, my grandmother's confusion lifted—her smile brightened, she laughed, and for brief but priceless seconds, she seemed decades younger. Those moments of vitality and joy are something my family and I will carry with us forever.
Nurse Nixie embodies what it means to care for the mind, body, and spirit. Her name, Cienfuegos—"100 Fires"—feels profoundly fitting. She ignites confidence, warmth, and reassurance in the people she cares for, and I am certain she has done this many times before. She is a true role model within the nursing profession and a shining example of AdventHealth's mission.
