The compassion, expertise, and reassurance she provided left a lasting impression—one I will remember always.
I wanted to recognize my night-shift Labor & Delivery nurse, Taylor, for many reasons.
I had an excellent labor and delivery experience with my first child at this same hospital and unit, and I was worried my second experience might not live up to those expectations. When I arrived for my scheduled induction, I was already in active labor and in significant pain. Taylor was assigned to me that shift, and she immediately demonstrated exceptional clinical awareness.
She quickly assessed me, got me checked in and settled, and recognized how far along I was. Understanding my request for an epidural, she moved with purpose and urgency. She called for another nurse to assist with starting IV fluids, so I could receive pain relief as soon as possible. Her ability to multitask and attention to detail were impressive.
Once I was comfortable, Taylor continued to check on me regularly, explaining what she was assessing and how my labor was progressing. I always felt informed, and she patiently answered every question I had.
As labor progressed, Taylor remembered that I was concerned about tearing during delivery, as I had experienced a second-degree tear with my first child, who weighed over 9 pounds. When it was time to change positions and sit up in the bed, she worked very deliberately, applying oil and guiding me through practice pushes so my body could stretch slowly and naturally. For well over an hour, she stayed with me, reassuring me and helping position my baby optimally before the physician arrived.
It was also Taylor’s experience that led her to notice meconium discharge. She calmly explained that she would have the NICU team present at delivery, preparing me so I would not be alarmed if additional time was needed to assess my baby. There was, in fact, quite a bit of meconium, and although the NICU team initially cleared my baby to remain with me, Taylor later noticed subtle but concerning signs: labored breathing and visible chest retractions. It was Taylor’s assessment that led to the difficult but necessary decision to transfer my baby to the NICU.
My baby spent about three days in the NICU, and after multiple evaluations and adjustments, we were able to go home together on Christmas Eve.
I chose to nominate Taylor because, although she is relatively young, she demonstrated the professionalism, judgment, and confidence of a seasoned nurse. Because of her thoughtful care, I did not experience any tearing during delivery and only needed to push two to three times. After delivery, even the physician remarked on how well Taylor had positioned and prepared me earlier in the evening.
