In the middle of stress and uncertainty, Irene was our steady light. She transformed what could have been an uncomfortable hospital experience into one defined by compassion and trust.
We would like to recognize Irene E for the extraordinary care she provided to my husband for the care she provided during his hospital stay for an infected dog bite.
During this stressful and uncertain time for our family, Irene embodied everything this award represents- clinical excellence, compassion, advocacy, and extraordinary human connection.
My husband was admitted for a severe infection following a dog bite. What began as a simple injury quickly became overwhelming and scary. We were anxious, exhausted, and unsure of what to expect. From the moment Irene walked into the room, everything shifted. Her calm presence alone made us feel safer.
Irene did not just provide medical care, but also provided comfort, dignity, and reassurance. She was consistently attentive, responding quickly whenever my husband needed anything. She carefully monitored his condition, performed wound care with gentleness, changed his bedding without being asked, and made sure he was physically comfortable at all times. She anticipated needs before we even voiced them.
One moment stands out that we will never forget.
Earlier in the day, my husband had endured three unsuccessful IV attempts. The nurses were kind and tried their absolute best, but he was left in pain and feeling defeated and anxious about trying again. When Irene came on shift, she approached the situation with patience and confidence. She took her time assessing, explaining, and reassuring him. She did not rush.
With the softest touch and steady hands, she placed the IV successfully on her very first attempt. My husband said he barely felt it. The relief in that moment was overwhelming. We were genuinely celebrating in the room, not just because the IV was in, but because Irene restored his sense of trust and comfort.
Despite the delay in antibiotics due to the earlier attempts, Irene immediately developed a plan to ensure his IV medications stayed on track. She advocated for him, problem-solved efficiently, and maintained clear communication so we always knew what was happening.
What makes Irene truly extraordinary is that her care extended beyond my husband. She consistently checked on me as well, making sure I was comfortable while staying overnight with him. She treated us as people, not just patients. We felt seen, heard, and cared for.
In the middle of stress and uncertainty, Irene was our steady light. She transformed what could have been an uncomfortable hospital experience into one defined by compassion and trust. Because of her, we will leave Memorial Hermann Katy not just grateful for medical treatment, but profoundly thankful for the human connection we experienced.
Irene exemplifies the very heart of nursing and the mission of Memorial Hermann. We will never forget the difference she made for our family, and we wholeheartedly believe she deserves recognition as a DAISY Nurse.
