She values patient safety above all else and took action to ensure her team was prepared to provide safe, high-quality care.
Mandy is the Nursing Professional Development (NPD) specialist on the Labor and Delivery unit at Park City Hospital. This hospital is a critical hub for patients in Wyoming as well as the Wasatch Back area of Utah and serves a large geographical region. However, Park City is a community hospital and does not have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Recognizing the importance of being able to care for critically ill newborns without the support of a NICU, Mandy created a plan. She developed short simulation scenarios that she facilitates in small groups with the Labor and Delivery team every quarter. Each quarter, the simulations focus on a different aspect of caring for critically ill newborns and ensuring safe neonatal resuscitation when necessary.

These simulations have been a tremendous success with her team. Staff appreciate the opportunity to practice the skills necessary to care for their sickest newborn patients, giving them greater confidence in their ability to provide excellent care to every family they serve.

The caregivers had so many positive things to say about these simulations that other departments within the hospital asked to participate as well. Mandy, along with Nikki, one of the nursing clinical leaders on the unit, expanded the simulations to include Respiratory Therapy and the House Supervisor teams. This interdisciplinary approach has strengthened teamwork, communication, and competency when caregivers are providing lifesaving care to babies born at Park City Hospital.

Mandy saw a need and didn't wait for someone else to solve the problem. She values patient safety above all else and took action to ensure her team was prepared to provide safe, high-quality care. She truly embodies the belief that we are better together—for our community, our patients, and our caregivers.

Mandy's simulations have improved neonatal resuscitation competency across multiple teams at Park City Hospital. Her work has helped caregivers better recognize safety concerns, communicate effectively, and escalate issues appropriately, even during high-stress code situations. As a result, both mothers and babies receive safer, higher-quality care, making a lasting impact on the patients and families served by Park City Hospital.
