Liz leads by example; she doesn't just say what needs to be different or changed.
Liz has been our CNL for a little over a year now; however, a few months ago she was also made our interim manager. During this time, we were also going through major leadership changes, getting ready for TogetherCare, and actively working through a staffing shortage while our patient census was steadily increasing. Not once did Liz ever make it evident how difficult things had become. She always had/has a positive attitude at work; she is never too busy to help staff out, and she always lets our team know what a great job everyone is doing. She led us through such a stressful period but did it with such poise that our staff never really felt the true reality of what was going on.
Liz leads by example; she doesn't just say what needs to be different or changed. She identifies where there is room for improvement and makes a plan to execute that change. However, she does this in a way that does not feel forced or as if no one has a say; she seeks input from staff and likes for staff to voice their opinion. Through this, she builds trust and fosters an environment that encourages team engagement. This gives staff the confidence to express and share ideas they have about the unit.
One of the many changes Liz made when becoming our CNL was that she started a policy committee. This committee doesn't just go over policies that need to be reviewed. It facilitates collaboration, and the nurses who are a part of the committee have a say in what our unit practices. It gave our nurses autonomy and a voice. When I first joined the policy committee, I wasn't sure I would be an active member for long, but after the first meeting I knew that the work we would be doing mattered and made a difference.
If there is something you want to achieve and you ask Liz for help, she will help you get there. If there is something Liz thinks you can accomplish and you aren't so sure of yourself, Liz will help you accomplish it. She recognizes people's individual strengths and what makes them unique and uses this to help staff realize how they can continue to grow and excel in their roles. She helps ensure the success of staff by consistently providing resources, education, and professional development opportunities.
She is highly deserving of this recognition.
