Henry didn't look away or offer empty reassurance. He stopped, he listened, and he heard me.
Henry Fox exemplifies everything a nurse should be, not just on a clinical level, but on a deeply human one.

My grandmother is facing the end of her life. She has a bowel perforation, has become mostly bed-bound after two falls, and was in and out of cognition the day Henry cared for her. As a nurse myself, and with my husband of six years working in hospice admissions, we both recognized that she is transitioning. Accepting that about someone you love is an entirely different experience than knowing it professionally.

I had an emotional breakdown at the nurses' station. Henry didn't look away or offer empty reassurance. He stopped, he listened, and he heard me. He truly heard me. Within ten minutes, he had the physician on the unit and hospice consulted. He advocated for my grandmother swiftly and without hesitation because that is clearly who he is as a nurse.

Throughout the day, Henry monitored her urine output closely, repositioned her regularly to prevent bedsores, and answered every question I had with patience and care. When my grandmother couldn't hear him, he didn't raise his voice from across the room. He leaned down close to her so she could hear him speak directly to her. He told her about his baby arriving next week. My grandmother, who was confused and kept drifting in and out, lit up. She was so charmed by him that she thought he was an old friend of the family and asked how long we had known him.

That is the mark of an extraordinary nurse. It is someone whose warmth transcends even the fog of illness. Henry carried out his work with tenderness, vigilance, and what I can only describe as a sacred sense of mission. On one of the hardest days of my life, he made me feel seen, and he made my grandmother feel cherished.
