A Rapid Response was called to Unit 4A, where Ms. Cardiel responded as she normally does when she is working. Betsy is always very involved and does an amazing job providing excellent customer service and high-quality care during the RRTs. On this specific night, the RRT took almost an hour. Betsy was very hesitant to leave the patient on 4A due to her being critical, and the patient flow team was trying to send the patient out for a higher level of care.

Betsy took the initiative to call the ICU Intensivist to express her concerns of leaving the patient on 4A versus taking the patient to 4C. in the meantime, Betsy returned to her unit where she was team leader.

After a while, I went to see Betsy to thank her for staying on 4A so long with her own workload and taking the time to advocate for the patient and 4A staff, but I was unable to find her because she was keeping an eye on the 4A patient (via Tele monitors) after she had gone back to her own unit and saw the patient was starting to run tachycardic in the 150s. She immediately went back to 4A without hesitation. Betsy again advocated since the patient had not been able to be transferred out yet, and the patient was then taken to the ICU until transfer occurred.

Ms. Cardiel did not have to continue to monitor this patient once the RRT was completed. Her commitment to her patients and co-workers for advocating as a leader was phenomenal. Betsy went above and beyond her job duties that night for the safety of the patient and to keep another unit’s staff safe. Thank you, Betsy. Your commitment does not go unnoticed.
