One night, Hollie Martin and I were working with this one patient. We had been working with him for nights. She was his nurse, and I was his respiratory therapist. We stayed by his side because his SpO2 was dropping. We were maxed out on oxygen. His family was at the bedside. It was a tough decision, but he decided he wanted to be put on the ventilator. He knew that if he was to be intubated, it was very unlikely he would be extubated. He had tears in his eyes. Hollie asked if he wanted to write his wife a letter. Hollie tried to call her, but it was in the early morning hours. Since he was unable to contact her via phone, he wrote her a letter. Hollie put the letter to the side so that once she came to the hospital, she would get her letter. It was extremely thoughtful of Hollie to do that. Unfortunately, the patient did pass away, but he got to tell his wife that he loved her and that she was the love of his life. Amazing job, Hollie.
