Dana is originally from Massachusetts and she has been caring for a fellow Massachusetts native in the CCU. He actually grew up in the same town she went to college! This patient has been admitted for months and has also had a really difficult time as a young guy who suffered a cardiac arrest and has been on various forms of life support. Dana FB messaged the Boston Red Sox (along with two other Boston sports teams and without any identifying patient data of course) to request they send her a card or something to help cheer up her patient and remind him that he is "Boston Strong," Which they did! She was able to give this patient a physical care package from the Boston Red Sox (including a bobblehead, sunglasses, a bracelet, a card, a puzzle, Sox, and more) to remind him to keep going and stay strong. While I know Dana takes great care of all her patients whenever she is working, this example shows her extraordinary compassion towards this specific patient who really needed some compassion and a reminder of how strong he is. I know that Dana has made a significant positive impact on this patient's experience and I want to acknowledge both her hard work clinically for this patient as well as her emotional support and kindness to him during probably the worst months of his life. To me, this is what the DAISY Award is all about!
