6 West is extremely lucky to call Terence Manning a core nurse and team member. He is dedicated, and compassionate and consistently goes above and beyond for his patients. One of Terence's bonus skills is that he is fluent in Spanish. This means he is usually assigned to our Spanish-speaking-only patients.

Recently we had a patient with very complex care needs and a difficult discharge disposition, so he was inpatient for an extended period. Mr. A had a trach, a PEG, facial wound packing, was unable to speak with limited ability to write in Spanish, and a plan for outpatient radiation treatments with no one to help him coordinate care outside of the hospital. Terence knew he would be assigned this patient every shift without fail. He never complained; he knew although his care was complex, he was best suited to work with him. Finally, the day came when Mr. A was ready for discharge. We as a unit just thanked our lucky stars that Terence was on that shift.

Terence worked non-stop coordinating nutrition supplies, medication delivery, and education of each medication purpose and schedule (he went to a clinic to get a weekly medication organizer), and sufficient medical supplies. He familiarized Mr. A with his radiation schedule and directions to the bus (with the bus schedule). The list goes on for all of the discharge preparation Terence did. After loading up all of his supplies and belongings onto a cart, Terence walked Mr. A down to wait for his scheduled cab ride. He didn't leave him to wait for his ride alone as he knew there may be communication barriers Mr. A would face that he could help with.

After an hour of waiting for the cab that sent two different updates that they were late, Terence ended up pushing the cart and walked Mr. A all the way to the hospitality house where he would be staying for the duration of his radiation treatments. He helped Mr. A fill out paperwork at the desk and get checked in. He of course made sure his other patients were covered in his absence. There was no other nurse that could have or would have done what Terence did that day.

Thank you, Terence!
