Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is DAISY always all capital letters?

A: Patrick had Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. So his wife, Tena (DAISY Co-founder and Vice President) came up with the acronym DAISY, standing for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem. We always use all caps to indicate the acronym and because it is our brand. Thank you for including your marketing department in your DAISY program to keep our brand standards consistent.

Q: Is this program only for RN’s?   Are LPNs/LVNs eligible for The DAISY Award? Are advance-degree/advance practice nurses eligible?

A: When we started the program, our intent was to honor RNs and nurses with advanced degrees/advance practice nurses who care for patients, providing direct care. To ensure The DAISY Award fits their culture, there are some organizations that include LPNs/LVNs. They tend to be smaller organizations/hospices with fewer than 200 nurses.

Q: How do current Partners fund their DAISY programs?

A: There is no better time than now to begin honoring your nurses with The DAISY Award. But we know how tight resources are at all healthcare organizations. Following is a list of funding sources DAISY Partners use to underwrite the cost of the program:

Internal sources:

  • Operating budget
  • Magnet® or Pathways to Excellence® budget
  • Nurses Week budget
  • Your Foundation
  • Volunteers/auxiliary organization
  • Nursing endowment (e.g. Friends of Nursing, if you have one)

External/community sources:

  • Local service organizations (Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists, Soroptimists, etc.)
  • Local businesses (banks, supermarkets, etc.
    • Some DAISY Partners ask several local businesses to each take one DAISY Award per year to sponsor and participate in their Award celebrations.
    • Please note that the Program Sponsorship fee is double what you would pay were you to budget for The DAISY Award internally. If you are interested in this approach, we will explain all the marketing benefits your local Program Sponsor will gain that justify the increased donation.
  • Hospital vendors
    • Compliance issues may apply, however, companies that do business with your hospital often relish the opportunity to support your nurses with The DAISY Award.

Q: Can we present more than oneDAISY Award at a time?

A: This is your program. If you have a compelling story of two or three nurses having done something wonderful for a patient that you consider worthy of The DAISY Award, please do give it to them. An organization once called and asked us to help them choose between two nurses who worked together on a patient situation. They asked us, “What would Patrick have done?” Our immediate answer: Pat would have given it to both of them!  In situations like this, you may also want to consider giving them a DAISY Team Award. Click here for more information.

Q: Why do you ask us to serve cinnamon rolls or a cinnamon type treat?

A:  Patrick had lost his appetite for food, but one day he ate his father’s cinnamon roll when he was in the hospital. Patrick then requested one for the next day - and enough for all the nurses in the unit.

Our message to every nurse present: Whenever you smell that wonderful cinnamon aroma, please use it as a trigger to stop for a moment and think about how special you are because you are a nurse.

Q: Why does The DAISY Foundation feel so strongly about the Nominee Pins?

A: Simply having someone take the time to write a thoughtful nomination for a nurse is in itself worthy of acknowledgement to the nurse. So, we created the Nominee Pin, and for those nominated multiple times, the multi-nominee pin. We often say that nurses cannot receive enough recognition. This is a great way to recognize the special work a nurse does, help build awareness of The DAISY Award in your organization, and most importantly, ensure that meaningful recognition goes on in your organization all year long.

Q: If a nurse is nominated but is not chosen to receive The DAISY Award, can we roll the nomination into the next month’s pool?

A: Of course! Many of our organizations tell us they keep a nomination in the pool for consideration for 3-6 months.

Q: How do we order more DAISY Award supplies?

A: It is our standard to ship your year's DAISY gifts and supplies as soon as your DAISY Award invoice is paid. If you need it sooner, please try to give us about a month’s notice for shipping, just to be sure your box gets to you in time. Please email your Regional Program Team to request expedited shipping, and we will tell you what the additional cost will be.

Q: What do we do if a Healer’s Touch breaks?

A: Please email DAISYsupplies@DAISYfoundation.org, and we’ll replace it.

Q: I can’t find our Certificate template.  How can I get another one?

A: Please email your Regional Program Team to request a new DAISY Award Certificate Template which will come to you in PowerPoint format in a return email or you can access a generic template in the "Presenting The DAISY Award" section of the resource center.

Q: How does The DAISY Foundation want us to tell them about our DAISY Nurses?

A: After each Award presentation, please register your DAISY Nurse at Register Your DAISY Nurses. There are many benefits to doing this!  Each of your Honorees will receive her/his own Spotlight page on our website. Their nomination stories and photos will be shared with our many media and organization partners who help celebrate their extraordinary work. Please also share your stories and tag us on social media! We are active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Please view our marketing toolkit for social media templates, ads, and more. Additionally, we have a DAISY Pinterest page to share best practices and creative ideas from our DAISY Partners.

Q: What if one of our nurses or a patient wants to donate to The DAISY Foundation?

A: Just go to the Donate page. It's easy, and we're grateful for your support!
