After months of mysterious back pain, a diagnosis of cirrhosis, and several ER visits, my husband was admitted to 2D for a further workup after an abnormal outpatient MRI. As a nurse, when someone you love is sick, the mind always goes into overdrive. So many things went through my head. I did not want to burden the nurses with "too many questions." I know my husband was secretly afraid and had his own questions, too.

From the arrival to the unit, you could feel the compassion. Carlito and Dennis were so kind and sweet. I knew I did not have to worry when I left my husband for the night. He was in great hands. Alexa and Jenn seemed to be his nurses a lot during the most crucial times of his diagnosis. Alexa, always smiling while doing her hourly rounding. She is the kind of nurse that you need at your lowest point because she won't let you stay there. She was so compassionate, and you can tell she truly cares about her patient's well-being. She made several calls to the doctors for clarification when I had questions and never made us feel like a burden.

Jenn probably didn't realize it at the time, but her support and professionalism during the biopsies made all the difference. She may be one of the most empathetic nurses I have ever met. My husband was waiting for the results of his biopsies, and she said, "I don’t know what you are going through, but I'm here for both of you.” She knew the right things to say during very stressful moments. I was secretly breaking down but, hearing her say that, I knew how much she cared. It was the first time in my life I could be the family member and not the nurse, even just for a brief moment.

Brianne advocated to make sure my husband was discharged in a timely fashion since the consulting doctors were clearing him, and he was so excited to get home. Another nurse was such a compassionate and caring nurse. I feel like she had to take my husband’s blood pressure so much with all the hypotensive episodes, but she always did it with a smile.

Although Pinky did not care for my husband, she was always giving out the best hugs and support to me. Her energy was palpable. Liz, April, Alnisa, Diane, Justin, Filomena, and Nicole were upbeat and enthusiastic, and they kept us going during one of the most difficult times in our lives. Wilma is truly an amazing leader. She went above and beyond to ensure all tests and procedures were communicated and completed. She was so professional during leadership rounding and wanted to ensure that my husband had the best experience for the circumstance. She brought in snacks to the staff on a weekend she was not working and came in to see us before she left for home.

After 13 days of being in the hospital, my husband received the news of stage 4 prostate cancer. I asked if our son could see his dad. Our son had been asking for his dad throughout the day and it was becoming difficult for him to not see his dad. Marley gave permission for my husband to see our son. Our nurse Gillian was determined to get the order from the doctor, and after she did, even though it was change of shift she took him down herself, staying late. We are so grateful for that moment.

When I think of the staff on this unit, they provided all the care you would want for a loved one to have. I could confidently say it was the best experience during the worst circumstances. We were treated like family. My husband enjoyed his interactions with all of the staff, and they truly deserve to be recognized. We will never forget the experience on this unit and the amazing care that they provided.
