I am writing on behalf of myself, my sister, and my whole family. My sister was admitted to Memorial Hospital with severe complications from chemotherapy. She started on 5 South Oncology, but her health rapidly declined and she had to be transferred to CPICU. All of her systems shut down and things were touch and go for a while. By the grace of God, she recovered and was sent back to 5 South Oncology.
During both of her stays on 5 South, she received exceptional care from everyone. But there were many we wanted to specifically mention (in no particular order and I don't have their last names). We are forever grateful to Tim, Berdawn, Lisa, Janet, Misty, Alayna, and Sherri. Tim was actually her nurse for 6 days in a row. We got very attached to his high level of care and we were sad when he went off rotation. Everyone's care, compassion, and going above and beyond to make sure my sister was comfortable and well taken care of touched all of our hearts. By the time she got back to 5 South, she was too weak to walk. She also had bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. So there were a lot of bedpans and cleaning her up and they were very patient and professional.
I've always said I could never be a nurse, mostly because I am impatient. But now if I had to, I can change chucks, sheets put a bedpan under you, and pull someone up in bed. Haha, the truth is I have always respected nurses for how hard they work and the long hours they put in. After this experience, that is an understatement. They are constantly busy. They have to be exhausted after a 12-hour shift. One of many reasons our respect for all of them as gone through the roof!!
We always took the time to thank them for everything they did for my sister and for us as her loved ones. I don't think they get that feedback as often as they deserve it. My sister would tell them all the time that she loved them, they were her angels and they saved her life. ALL TRUE!
My sister's total stay at Memorial was 32 very long, stressful, and scary days. But the one thing we held onto was our confidence knowing she was getting incredible care on 5 South Oncology. We are so grateful to them all. We will never forget their kindness and care. They truly are angels.
