Abbey was so good about keeping me, and my wife, updated on the treatment plan and the progress we were making.
My wife took me to the emergency room. After being processed, I was transferred to a room. I was helped by many fine professionals, however, ABBEY stands out! The hospital doctor explained some of the testing that I had received but it was Abbey after the doctor had left, who looked at my wife and me and simply said, “You have pneumonia.” That was understandable news to us. Then she went on to simply state what treatment was being instituted and what meds were being used and how they fit in. Plain simple language. She answered all our questions. There became an issue with steroids completely unbalancing my glucose levels. Glucose soared to over 400 at times. Abbey immediately advocated for me, working with the doctor (who the staff really appreciates as he listens to their suggestions and insights) to try and find some corrective steps. Abbey has worked with type II diabetics. In checking glucose levels the other staff members would lance right in the middle of the finger—where all of the nerves are located! When Abbey had to check glucose, she chose places on the side of the finger. I immediately commented to her, “You have worked with diabetics before, haven’t you? You are placing the lancet right where they taught us to place it.” Abbey was so good about keeping me, and my wife, updated on the treatment plan and the progress we were making. As discharge time approached she took much extra time teaching me how to give myself an insulin shot—never done that before and I am quite alarmed by needles and other sharp objects! She knew my “needle aversion” but supervised me giving myself an insulin shot—insisting that I do it. Without her encouragement and patience, I would have come home, expected to give myself insulin shots as needed, and would have had to watch a video or something to figure it out. Her time, experience, and patience went way beyond the call of duty. Lastly, she oversaw all of the checking-out procedures—of which there were many. She worked to ensure I got all of the meds necessary from the pharmacy yet tried to keep the cost within a doable range—I saw her working on that at the desk area when taking a short exercise walk. And, Abbey even chose to take me to the patient exit area while I knew she had tons of work to do on the floor. Abbey is truly a treasure for Genesis and our community.
