There was a pediatric code in the ED at UPMC Hanover. Before the patient was sent to a larger facility that could accept higher acuity pediatric patients, the mother was requesting her son to be blessed by someone who held the priesthood with the LDS. There was not time to call someone from the outside in. Our house supervisor asked Abel to come down during his work day. Abel anointed the child with oil and said a blessing over the patient. This was a great comfort to the mother. Abel was really put on the spot with the request, but his willingness to come down and do this for a stranger is not only a great example of his compassion and care as a nurse, but a great testament to his dedication to his faith. His willingness to help meant a lot to this family.
