He advocated for me and got that straightened out so I could keep those symptoms under control while dealing with what brought me in.
Alan Masis was my nurse in the ICU. I met him the morning after I had difficulty swallowing. I was so happy to be better. He asked sincerely if there was anything I needed. He paused long enough for me to realize I should advocate for myself. I hadn’t been getting my MS related pills. I am careful at home to the point that I can feel close to symptom free. Something went wrong at intake two days before and my doses were wrong. When I asked other nurses to help, they were unsuccessful. When I brought up a med being the wrong one, it disappeared from the app. Alan asked about my MS experience and really listened. He advocated for me and got that straightened out so I could keep those symptoms under control while dealing with what brought me in. I was a person, not just a job.
