Jack and Kevin Essex (Clerk Pre/Post-Op) were transporting a patient from the PACU to the nursing unit when the elevator broke down. Kevin and Jack called for assistance. They remained calm as they continued to reassure the patient and provide appropriate care for the next 2 hours and 10 minutes. Ursula assisted with the patient's care once an opening was created by obtaining and passing items into the elevator such as medications, 02 tank, pulse oximetry, laptop computer, nutrition, etc. Jack's shift ended at 1900, however Jack, Kevin, and the patient were not free from the elevator until around 2100.  From my conversation with Kevin, the experience was handled with utmost consideration of the patient. Given this patient's medical and psychiatric history, this experience could easily have gone poorly. Instead, Kevin and Jack had the patient laughing and talking as they exited the elevator and finally arrive on the unit.
