By ensuring that the patient’s daughter understood discharge instructions, O’Bara demonstrated his commitment to helping our patients achieve the best possible outcomes.
Alexander is very compassionate and always treats his patients with love and kindness.

A 95-year-old patient was experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding at home in her retirement community. The patient called an ambulance and requested to be brought to our MFSMC, even though she was told there might be a long wait. She was admitted via the emergency department for three days. The patient’s daughter wrote to us to commend one of our nurses for his exceptional care and service to her mother. Upon being admitted to the medical/surgical unit, the patient was greeted by Alexander O’Bara, Clinical Nurse II. As soon as he entered the patient’s room, O’Bara sat down with the patient, spoke to her about her condition, and conversed with her. This patient has been hospitalized for this issue multiple times but mentioned to her daughter that the care she received from her nurse during this visit was especially noteworthy.

The patient’s daughter recalled, “He was so nice to my mother. He spoke to her like a person and offered her coffee and tea. His kindness was so meaningful to me because my mom is 95 years old, and I want the best for her. Then, when I arrived, he was just as nice to me as he was to my mother. He sat down with me and spoke to me for a least 20-30 minutes to discuss discharge instructions and answer any questions I had. As a retired nurse, I can tell you that he is exceptional.”

“We need to consider our patients as people first. Honestly, I wish I had more time to speak with patients and get to know them better. I tell every patient the same thing in the morning- for the twelve hours we’re together, we’re family. There is no such thing as bothering people here. If you need something, you press that call bell every time. I tell them if they need something, ring the bell because then I know when the call light is not on that they are well taken care of,” says O’Bara.

He was able to leave a lasting impression by simply listening to this patient and engaging in conversation. His attentiveness demonstrated to her that he was invested in her care. In addition, it is always important to remember that caring for outpatients also means caring for their families.

By ensuring that the patient’s daughter understood discharge instructions, O’Bara demonstrated his commitment to helping our patients achieve the best possible outcomes. This patient chose to come to our hospital for expert care, but the kindness and compassion she felt from our team left the most lasting impression.

We at MFSMC appreciate you, Alex, for leaving a beautiful nursing footprint here. Your compassion and tender heart are well received, and the everlasting memories you have left with patients and families. Thank you for being extraordinary!
