Allee spent the entire day in the room with the patient – therapeutically communicating with her, playing music and songs for her, and encouraging her.
Allee has consistently demonstrated a caring and compassionate spirit throughout the semester. She has been observed to go above and beyond when caring for patients in the clinical setting on many occasions. One particular time involved the care of a sweet 94 y/o patient who was in the ICU. The patient was confused, restless, and very anxious. She had been in the hospital for many days and was unable to be calmed by the nursing staff. She expressed that she just wanted to go home and she wished she had a coloring book to help pass the time. This student spent the entire day in the room with the patient – therapeutically communicating with her, playing music and songs for her, and encouraging her. She took the time to wash the patient’s hair and really listen to the patient. At the end of the shift, the patient was calm, happy, smiling, and so appreciative of the compassion that had been demonstrated. She hugged the student and thanked her repeatedly for taking care of her. The next day, on her own time, the student brought a coloring book for the patient. The patient was overjoyed, greeted the student by name, and thanked her over and over for coming back to see her. This is just one example of how this student made connections with her patients. Her sensitivity and comforting manners are just some of the reasons she is going to be an Extraordinary Nurse. Not only is she knowledgeable and competent, but she consistently demonstrates a commitment to compassionate care. I am so proud to know her and can’t wait to see the outstanding nurses that she is becoming.
