Alyssa attended the infant’s delivery and then followed them through the course of their stay. In addition to providing exemplary bedside and clinical care to this patient, she also served as a fierce patient advocate.
In the nursing profession, I feel that we have the unique opportunity each day to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients and their families. The nurses who choose to come to work each day and give 100% effort are the ones who can make the biggest impact. Alyssa Pedi is one of those nurses. Although she is a relatively new nurse, having only been in this career for under 3 years, she has managed to make significant contributions to both her patients and their families and also her colleagues in this short time.
One specific example is with an infant she recently chose to primary. Taking the initiative to complete a Small Baby Care Specialistic course that had been assigned to our new nurses with under 3 years of experience was the first step that enabled her to care for one of our most fragile patients. She attended the infant’s delivery and then followed them through the course of their stay. In addition to providing exemplary bedside and clinical care to this patient, she also served as a fierce patient advocate. Being a strong patient advocate in our unit is especially important due to both our patient population’s medical fragility and their lack of ability to speak and therefore advocate for themselves. Furthermore, Alyssa also made sure to help the infant’s family to celebrate each milestone, such as her first bottle, different weight gain milestones, and transitioning to an open crib. Helping a family celebrate these milestones is so important as these families are often traumatized by the NICU experience and what the future holds for their child. I can happily report that this infant was recently discharged to home, and I can say with certainty that Alyssa’s amazing care helped this process to happen in a relatively short time considering the gestational age of the infant.
In addition to making significant impacts on her patients and their families, I also want to recognize the impact that Alyssa has made on her colleagues. In her relatively short time in our unit, Alyssa has nominated and successfully helped 3 of her coworkers win impressive awards. The fact that Alyssa is able to recognize the excellence she sees in her coworkers is such a beautiful gift. I strongly feel that we should celebrate and recognize the extraordinary coworkers who make such a huge impact, and that’s the reason I would now like Alyssa to have her turn at being recognized for her significant contributions to our unit and hospital.
