Recently, Medic #3 arrived at Brazosport to conduct a medical transfer for a critically ill 27 yr old female patient suffering from a serious GI bleed, significant abdominal pain, and acute hepatic failure. The patient was experiencing alcohol withdrawals and suffers from anxiety, depression and Bi-polar disorder. When we tried to transport the patient she refused transport and exhibited extreme anxiety over the transfer and began shaking and crying. This patient was in a critical condition and wanted to just go home and no longer seek any medical treatment which would have certainly been detrimental to her health as the patient required a liver transplant. The patient's physician, other nurses, and the patient's mother attempted to persuade the patient to agree to the medical transfer but were unable to calm the patient's anxiety and fear in order for the patient to agree to be transported.
Nurse Amber had just concluded a 12-hour shift at the emergency department and was due to be off-duty. However, in the finest tradition of healthcare and patient advocacy, Nurse Amber had developed a relationship with the patient and volunteered to accompany the patient during the transfer, while off-duty, to help ease any anxiety and fear the patient was experiencing. Without Nurse Amber agreeing with the patient to accompany her throughout the duration of the transfer, I am certain the patient would have refused the transfer and further medical care which would have certainly resulted in a deterioration of the patient's condition. Nurse Amber sat in the patient compartment with the patient throughout the transfer, talking with the patient and easing her anxiety, fear and accompanied the patient to her room at the receiving facility. Nurse Amber introduced the new medical staff to the patient to ease the transfer of care and allow the patient to relax and seek the life saving medical care the patient desperately needed.
Nurse Amber's selfless service and dedication to patient advocacy and continuity of care highlight the high professional standards of the nursing community and are a credit to the standards of the emergency department staff at CHI St. Luke's Hospital at Brazosport. It is due to this selfless service and dedication to patient care and advocacy is why I believe Nurse Amber is a DAISY Nurse.
