Amy was back in the ICU, having offered to fill an open shift so that she could continue to care for her patient.
Amy Vo is an exemplary nurse. We all know this and witness it each day she works in our ICU. The staff looks up to Amy as a leader and as a mentor. If there is a complex case, Amy is our go to for guidance. Not only does Amy provide excellent care to her patients, but she also cares very much for all of her patients. She treats them as if they were her own family, looking after them to make sure they get the best possible care. She cares so much that she, at times, sacrifices her own time off.
One specific time, I recall her caring for a critically ill female patient over a period of several days. Throughout the day, Amy did all she could for this patient and took amazing care of her. At one moment, Amy mentioned to me that she was looking forward to her day off the next day to get some rest. But when I came back to work the next day, guess what? Amy was back in the ICU, having offered to fill an open shift so that she could continue to care for her patient. It was incredibly moving for me to witness Amy’s dedication. When I asked why she volunteered to work again that day, she replied, “I couldn’t sleep last night. I stayed up worrying about her, so I needed to be here to take care of her.” I believe Amy has demonstrated exactly what a skilled, caring, and compassionate nurse truly is.
