When Andrea came in that morning, you could tell the mom’s anxiety lessened.
This nurse deserves to be recognized for all the hard work, patience and overall great attitude while working with a difficult mom in the NICU. Day after day I watched how she built a relationship with the baby’s mother, who in my opinion, trusted very few people. This mother seemed to have a lot of anxiety and did not open up to many people during the baby’s stay, with Andrea being the exception. From what I witnessed, Andrea always approached the mother calmly, and patiently explained what the doctor’s plans were for the baby’s care, reassuring her time and time again that everything was going to be okay. I was also there the day the baby was going home and leading up to this day, there were a few nights the mom had differences with the staff, but when Andrea came in that morning, you could tell the mom’s anxiety lessened, even if she was pushing for discharge as soon as possible. Andrea showed a lot of compassion to this mom and baby and reminded her that she would be able to leave after the doctor arrived. Because of the relationship Andrea built, the mom trusted what she said and seemed to relax. I think it says a lot about Andrea as a nurse to be so patient and calm even when being pressed for time. She truly showed love and attention not only for the baby but the mom as well, which is important in this particular unit. You can tell Andrea is truly meant to be a nurse and help people, no matter the age or size. Andrea is an amazing nurse and the NICU is lucky to have her as part of their team!
