A patient and her daughter were traveling from the Philippines with a layover in Detroit when the mother was experiencing changes in mental status during her flight. The patient was transported to Beaumont Taylor ER and then admitted to ICU with a diagnosis of low sodium. When stabilized, the patient was transferred to the Med/Surg Unit. The pair was not familiar at all with the area and though all the staff on the unit made every effort to make the two comfortable, including providing a private room, Angela went over and beyond. The daughter of the patient was very uncomfortable with wearing shoes while caring for her mother. She wished she had slippers. A staff member who was also from the Philippines chimed in, "Oh yes, house shoes are very important!" Angela reached out to the daughter and took her to Walmart. Their trip included the purchase of some personal items and some house shoes! The daughter was so grateful and the doctor graciously recognized Angela to other staff for her thoughtfulness. She is a remarkable nurse. Angela is proactive to the needs of her patients and a team player. Please recognize her for this remarkable example of a nurse who went over and beyond her shift to make a family comfortable.
The patient's daughter even came back to Taylor to see Angela and thanked her again when she was on a layover at the airport!
