Ashley was nominated by a patient's family:
My son was at WakeMed for 8 days. For the majority of those days Ashley was our primary nurse. Ashley did an outstanding job letting us know what treatments were scheduled, what would happen and why the MD had placed the order. She did so well in setting our expectation, explaining timelines and schedules. My son's case was very difficult to diagnose...Ashley helped us understand what each of our three doctors were treating and focusing on.
The main reason Ashley is deserving of the DAISY Award is that my son is 19 years old. He missed his high school graduation ceremony because he was here. He was also recruited and signed to play collegiate soccer this fall at Gardner-Webb University. Ashley knew from spending time with us that not only was he missing graduation, he was worried that he would not walk and recover in time to join his team.
On the night of his graduation, he took his first steps (with a walker) outside of his room and when he turned around to take the few steps back, I could see her watching and her pride in his progress was evident. It helped me realize my son was going to be okay. So in our own little way, it was a graduation.
