The way that she has not only cared for our son as nurses do, but Ashley has also gone above and beyond to build a bond with him and us. He lights up when he hears her voice and sees her smiling face.
My son was diagnosed with meningitis. We were on the inpatient medicine unit and have been extremely blown away by the kindness and fantastic care of every doctor and nurse that we have had the pleasure of seeing throughout our stay thus far. I am a mom of four and my admitted son is the youngest, so I'm sure you can imagine how devastated we were to hear that he would be staying at Children's for over three weeks. I cried for hours and still have days where the tears seem endless. It is so hard to be separated from the rest of our family. I was told that I could leave and my son would be cared for by the nursing staff and volunteers. Although I know he would be well taken care of, I knew that I would be a wreck if I were not with him so I decided to stay here with my son. I reached out to my "village" to ask for help with my three older kids at home. It does take a village.
As I previously mentioned, we have been so impressed with the staff here. I should mention that this is not our first stay here at Children's. We have an older son with congenital heart disease who has had two open-heart surgeries at BCH. Of all the nurses that we have ever met, Ashley stands out from them all. The way that she has not only cared for our son as nurses do, but Ashley has also gone above and beyond to build a bond with him and us. He lights up when he hears her voice and sees her smiling face. She has not only cared for him, but she has also cared for my concerns as H's mother. She has encouraged me to take time for myself and showed me that sometimes that is the best way to care for my son during this difficult time.
Ashley knew how devastating the news of my son's illness was. She was so empathetic and genuine. I could see the tears in her eyes as I cried about missing so much time at home with my other kids. She is not only our son's nurse but she is his advocate, and now she is our friend. There is so much comfort in knowing that she is here caring for him. This is a very difficult situation to be in and having the pleasure of meeting Ashley has made an impossible situation possible. Thank you so much to all the wonderful nurses and doctors that we have met during this journey.
